I had the spare tire cover off of my 1976 Apache Royal today to clean it up. I noticed that when I put it back on (with some difficulty) that there was a gap/space between the cover and the rear bezel. Is this usual? I think I scraped tape off that had been use to apply a weather strip around the edges. Has anyone used a rubber strip to cushion the cover on the bezel? I would appreciate your thoughts/experience with this project.

I took the weather stripping off the edges of the spare tire cover on my 76 ramada (it was falling off anyway) and there is no gap on mine. I dont know what to say. Hope someone can help. Spencer 76 ramada

The weather stripping provides two types of protection..... First, it cushions the spare tire cover when you hit bumps, preventing cracks or worsening of existing hairline cracks. Second, it keeps road film and sand from entering the cover....obviously helping to inhibit corrosion of your spare tire bracket. The gap is simply the result of not having the cover correctly positioned. Take it back off and readjust. It may take a few minutes, but you'll get it. These covers are gold.....make sure it's on properly! _________________ Pete '67 Katie '69 Samantha '95 Shaun '96 Shannon '98 Ramada '74

Pete's only SLIGHTLY exaggerating when he says those spare tire covers are gold..actually they're worth MORE THAN THEIR WEIGHT in gold  someone here on the site lost theirs one time on the road and was asking if anyone knew where they could get another one; Tim replied that they'll find Atlantis before finding a replacement.

I've considered installing a second latch for safety on mine. Anyone out there done this already or have a good plan as to how??

I dont see how they can just fall off while on the road. If its locked, and the ABS is tucked in the aluminum around the bezle, what the heck do you have to worry about? On my parkland there is a single bolt holding it on, and you can acualy spin it when its attached since its round. That seems to work, maybe you could drill a hole beside the key hole, and a hole on the beacket where the tire goes on and weld a nut on it you could bolt it on...no? I personaly wouldnt, Im just suggesting it. ps, I want to say I no what it feels like to NOT have it, on may Parkland when I got it it was missing. BUT, I new of someone that tore down a Parkland and they kept the spare tire cover, so I got it. Spencer 76 ramada

Not sure how it could get lost either. All I can say is, like most other stuff in life, anything's possible. If you want to see the original post I was talking about, it's back on page 7, halfway down, titled "spare tire cover". _________________ Bill 77 Ramada

8-10 looped pieces of duct tape looped back on itself on the inside of the spare tire cover should be enough to hold on 18-20 of those covers. just make sure the wind ain't blowing when your trying to loop them big loops. Could get caught in yer hair and then you'd really have a mess.

Get a peice of rope and tie one end to the insider of the tire cover, and the other end to the spare tire mount. It will be used as a safty rope incase it comes loose  . Thats what im going to do.

I was worried about losing mine when I had heard that they were rare. I took a flat piece of metal, cut it about 4" X 2 1/2" and drilled 3 equally spaced holes. The center hole was the same diameter as the lock mechanism for the wheel cover. I unscrewed the lock from the cover and placed this new bracket (slightly bent) over the the lock and screwed it back on. I used a thin cable that runs through the new bracket as a safety restraint in case the original lock comes loose. _________________ 76 Ramada

Duct tape is like "The Force" - it has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together. _________________ al r. '72 Yuma
