I have an original canvas awning/screenroom that I would like to continue using, but it is a bit leaky and you can see pinhole size openings in the fabric. I have looked into this a bit on th web and have seen solutions such as CampDry (which is merely silicone spray, not the best choice IMHO), A pound af paraffin wax dissolved in a gallon of white gas and applied directly to the fabric (sound like decent idea, but the thought of self immolation is a bit scary), and what I think sounds the best, Thompsons Water Seal. Thompsons specifically says NOT to apply their product to material, only wood but I've heard some folks swear by the stuff as a waterproofer. Has anyone had experience here? There apparently are two types of generic Thompsons Water Seal out there. The old outlawed solvent based stuff and the newer water based stuff. I actually still have 10 gallons of the solvent based Olympic brand watersealer which works GREAT on my deck-really penetrates and leaves the wax emulsion behind deep in the wood. The water based stuff wasn't as penetrating. I am wondering if the solvent based stuff is a better choice, but can it be detrimental to the fabric??? Any takers? PL |

30 years ago I purchased a '65 Apache Raven. I took the canvas to a local awning maker and had all the seams gone over. The repairman sold me a gallon of Camp Dry in liquid form. He said to roll it on with a paint roller, and go over the seams with a soft candle. I had the Raven for 10 years and never had a leak. |

I would not recommend Thompson's. Try it on a small spot and see what you think. Go to your local hardware and buy a gallon of canvas waterproofing and then apply it with a small garden sprayer. _________________ Apaches are environmentally friendly & leaders of the pack. |

Don't think I would use the Thompson's. We know someone who did use on their canvas popup (not the awning). It made it stiff and not easily foldable. Deb
