For you non-sewers, if you must replace the foam pads and can't affford to pay anyone, you can go to a good fabric store that stocks upholstery supplies (or an upholstery shop) and get a good high density foam pad cut to size. Then carefully wrap it, just like a package and use diaper pins to hold the fabric together on the back side. Be SURE to use diaper pins so they don't come undone at a bad time... _________________ Ruth 3 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat '72 Apache Ranger '64 Apache Chief Nothern California

The 1979 models put foam on a piece of wood the size of your cusion, then rapped the fabric around and stappled to the wood. This idea would also work.

That would definitely work too. With a wood backing, f you took the cushions out before closing up (for storage) they'd be easier to stand in a corner of the garage, etc. So many people don't sew that I thought I should throw out one solution to the cushion problem. _________________ Ruth 3 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat '72 Apache Ranger '64 Apache Chief Nothern California

I have done a couple of 1979's and was dumbfounded to see the wood backed cusions. As I know of, it's the only year that they did this. At that time they were in trouble financialy at Vesely and I bet that was a quick and money saving answer to the cusions rather than having a bunch of people sewing cusions.

Hey Tim, great idea. I'm definitely gonna consider this. This method does have pros and cons though. Pro: would make back pads more stable Con: heavier less manageable-I toss the cushions on the bed ends when I want into the storage compartments Pro: something good and solid to whack a bear over the head with if they come looking for food

I guess we may not be talking about the beds here but for our Ramada, the original bed covers were so worn out and torn up that my mother and I pretty much sewed two twin sheets together like a big pillowcase and slid the bed down into it and now we have a pretty decent bed cover, in my opinion.

I have a '79 with the plywood backed cushions. I can see how it would be easier to toss the cushions around without the plywood, but I like the nice solid platform I get when the dinette is down in the 'bed' position. I'm a large person, so I appreciate the extra foundation the plywood provides. Also, as a non-sewer, I can reupolster my dinette with a bit of fabric and a staple gun. The beds in my Apache are in deteriorating condition, but the previous owner just covered the mattresses with full-size fitted sheets (mine has the 48" beds"), and it looks great. Eventually I'll get around to getting new foam and covers, but the sheets allow me to put off that project for a while

Yes, the sheets over the bed pads would work well. Again, if you don't sew, you can get a king sized flat sheet, wrap the bed pad and secure it with diaper pins. Remember, if you use this method, use diaper pins! They don't come loose like regular safety pins so if it's you, the kids, the dogs, etc, piled in there, you won't get stabbed in the night by an errant safety pin. _________________ Ruth 3 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat '72 Apache Ranger '64 Apache Chief Nothern California

To give you some idea about Pricing for the mattresses:

We still have the original mattress (foam only as the fabric rotted in our high humidity area & the vinyl was full of holes & tears when we got it). The foam had long since "died" making it uncomfortable to sleep on. I just called a local mattress manufacturing company in Chattanooga (Murmaid Mattress) and they will charge me about $80 for each 54" mattress (3" thick & made in 4-5 days). This is for a very firm mattress quality foam & will be covered just like a regular mattress. I had met someone in a Chattanooga campground that had Murmaid Mattress make their pop-ups mattresses & they say the replacements were more comfortable that the originals. Try doing an internet search or contact some local furniture stores to see if there is a mattress manufacturing company in your area.
